An employee assembles a fuel cell system in the module final assembly at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, GM and Honda's fuel cell joint venture in Brownstown, Michigan. BROWNSTOWN, Mich. – General Motors and Honda Motor have begun commercial production of hydrogen fuel cell systems in a step toward offering alternative zero-emissions solutions beyond battery-electric vehicles. The fuel cell systems are produced through a 50-50 joint venture between the automakers at an $85 million facility in suburban Detroit. The companies, which are marketing and selling products separately, are calling the "large-scale" production at the joint venture the first of its kind in the U.S. And now we can start to move it into these segments where before it wasn't really feasible," Charlie Freese, executive director of GM's "Hydrotec" fuel cell products, told CNBC during an event at the plant.

PHOENIX (AP) — Texas Rangers slugger Adolis García and pitcher Max Scherzer will miss the rest of the World Series after getting hurt in Game 3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. García, the AL Championship Series MVP, has a moderate strain of his left oblique. Scherzer, who had been in line to pitch a possible Game 7, has a muscle spasm in the right side of his back. García grabbed his left side while coming out of the batter’s box on his flyout against Luis Frías in the eighth inning. García was 3 for 10 in the World Series with two RBIs, including an 11th-inning home run off Miguel Castro that gave Texas a 6-5 win in Friday’s opener.

This one won an extended Game 1 of the World Series for the Texas Rangers. If I did that, I’d be screaming, too,” Texas second baseman Marcus Semien said. “It's going to be a really good series,” García said. He became the first position player in MLB history to appear in a World Series 15 years after first playing in the Fall Classic. He also became the fourth player with a World Series hit at both age 23 or younger AND 38 or older.

HOUSTON—Twelve years after one of the most devastating losses in baseball history, the heartbreak of the 2011 World Series still looms over the Texas Rangers. On two separate occasions in Game 6—in the ninth inning and then again in the 10th—the Rangers needed just one more strike to claim a championship over the St. Louis Cardinals. Both times, they blew the lead, punctuated by David Freese’s legendary walk-off home run that destroyed a generation of Rangers fans. “For a couple of years after that I would probably have a moment every day where I would think about it,” said Michael Young, the Rangers’ all-time hits leader and a key member of that 2011 squad. “If that ball goes off the end of his bat instead of smack dab on the barrel, this whole thing is different.”

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers are back in the World Series for the first time since twice being within one strike of winning the 2011 title. And these Rangers won't even be the first team to play in a World Series at Globe Life Field, their retractable-roof stadium that opened in 2020. Freese led off the 11th with a game-ending homer, and the Cards won Game 7 the following night. That 2016 division title is still the last for the Rangers, one of six big league teams without a World Series title. “I came here to get to the World Series, but I came here to win it.”___

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Rangers slugger Adolis García set a record for RBIs in a postseason series with 15 in the AL Championship Series and extended his home run streak to four games after going deep twice in Game 7 against the Houston Astros on Monday night. García stretched his RBI streak to six games with a single in the first inning of the pennant-deciding game. He's also the first player with RBIs in six straight games within a postseason series. Cruz had 13 RBIs for the Rangers in the 2011 ALCS against Detroit, which was the last time they went to the World Series. García has 20 RBIs in these playoffs, the most ever by a player before the start of the World Series.

Washington lawmakers are scrambling to pass a spending bill before an Oct. 1 deadline. For retirees who rely on Social Security and Medicare, the good news is those programs will mostly be unaffected because they are considered mandatory spending. "Checks will continue to go out," Bill Sweeney, senior vice president of government affairs at AARP, said of Social Security benefits. "Most seniors should be fine, both on the Medicare side and on the Social Security side," said Maria Freese, senior legislative representative at the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. If a shutdown happens this time around, it may be brief, according to Bill Hoagland, senior vice president at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

CNN —Michael Bublé made a surprise appearance at a Foo Fighters show on Saturday in San Francisco. The percussionist, who has played with a number of artists, including Bublé, has been performing with Foo Fighters following the death of their late bandmate, Taylor Hawkins. “The last couple shows — I always look out [into the crowd] — someone’s like ‘I know the Bublé song,’ ‘I’ll come up and sing,’ ‘I know the Bublé song,’” Grohl told the crowd. “And every time someone f—ing says they know the song, they don’t know the f—ing song. Who knows the f—ing song?”Bublé then popped up in the audience holding a sign, reading, “I [heart] Bublé.”“Hold on a second — we got a superfan.

Dark matter, invisible material whose presence is known mainly based on its gravitational effects at a galactic scale, would be a small but crucial ingredient in dark stars. Based on the Webb data, these objects could be either early galaxies or dark stars, Freese said. Conditions in the early universe may have been conducive to formation of dark stars, with high dark matter densities at the locations of star-forming clouds of hydrogen and helium. Freese and two colleagues first proposed the existence of dark stars in 2008, basing the name on the 1960s Grateful Dead song "Dark Star." And then you can learn about the properties of dark matter particles by studying a variety of dark stars of different masses."

CNN —The Foo Fighters have found their new drummer after the sudden death of their longtime friend and drummer Taylor Hawkins. During the “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts” livestream event that previewed the group’s 11th studio album, “But Here We Are,” on Sunday, the band introduced studio drummer Josh Freese as Hawkins’ successor. Freese is a veteran drummer and has played with Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, Sting and Weezer, among many others. He also played with the Foo Fighters during a London tribute show for Hawkins in 2022, even playing on the late drummer’s very own drum kit. Amid a stalemate on federal debt ceiling negotiations, some government officials are warning the Social Security checks sent to more than 65 million beneficiaries each month could be at risk. On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., warned a "Social Security shutdown" could happen if the U.S. defaults on its debt. The debt ceiling is the maximum amount of money the U.S. government can borrow. The pressure is on Congress to raise or suspend the debt limit before the emergency funding runs out. "Part of the challenge here is that this is unprecedented," said Maria Freese, senior legislative representative at the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
"The amount of energy BEVs need is so enormous that I see a strain on our grid that ultimately it can't fulfill." Daimler Truck will invest up to 15 billion euros ($16 billion) on fuel cells over the next decade, Daum said. Symbio, which supplies fuel cells for Stellantis vans, expects global fuel cell vehicle sales to reach 2 million units annually by 2030 and wants a 10% share. Both General Motors (GM) (GM.N) and Toyota (7203.T) are testing fuel cells for larger vehicles including semi-trucks and trains to build scale and lower costs. While Volkswagen is not currently investing in fuel cells, it has hundreds of patents around the technology.
But that should not include cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits, he said. For those only exposed through food, the EPA says that glyphosate residues on food are safe up to certain thresholds. The chemical giant Monsanto introduced glyphosate in its product Roundup in 1974. “Glyphosate is the most widely used chemical weedkiller in human history because of genetic engineering,” said Dave Murphy, the founder of Food Democracy Now, an advocacy group that tests glyphosate in food. “It’s sprayed ubiquitously and Monsanto has, for decades, just maintained that it’s the safest agricultural chemical ever made.”The EPA’s safety limits for glyphosate exposure from food are twice the levels allowed in the European Union. The company pointed NBC News to other studies — including some that it has sponsored — that either refuted a link to cancer or challenged the relationship between acres sprayed and exposure levels.

Additionally, two reports by organic advocacy groups found glyphosate in food products including cereals, cookies, crackers and sandwich bread. The EPA concluded in 2020 that glyphosate posed “no risks to human health” and was not likely to cause cancer. But a federal appeals court rejected that determination in June, stating that the EPA did not adequately assess the risks to endangered species and human health.
Monkeybusinessimages | Istock | Getty ImagesMillions of Americans may receive reduced Social Security benefits if they worked in public roles as teachers, firefighters, police or government workers. "There just aren't that many legislative days left," said Maria Freese, senior legislative representative at the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Why public servants encounter reduced Social SecurityThe Social Security Fairness Act calls for repealing two titles of the Social Security Act that reduce or eliminate benefits for Americans who work in public service — the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset. The Social Security Fairness Act would fully repeal both rules, thus making benefits more generous for those affected. 82 would need offsets not to have a huge financial impact on the Social Security trust funds, and it doesn't provide that," Sprick said.
